Reader gets new features

Google Reader is the online RSS reader powered by the Mountain View company that allows users to read feeds and headlines straight from a web-based interface. Following the recent improvements made to the Trends service, the Google Reader service also gets several new features able to provide live statistics about your feeds and the articles read through the service. The company added a new function just under the "Shared Items" link from Google Reader that shows you the reading trends, the subscription trends and interesting charts showing your feeds.

As Haochi from Googlified reports, it seems that the parent company is also preparing a search function for the web-based RSS reader that will add a search technology into the product. Although it might sound impossible, Google Reader is among the search giant's solutions that are not providing a search technology for the registered users. "Now, Martin Porcheron spot a few rules in Google Reader's CSS file hinting the search feature probably on its way. (around line 88) The CSS code reveals that the search box will be placed at the right side of the logo," Haochi said.

In the recent period, Google Reader was quite rarely improved and received only a limited number of features, most of them resulted from the updates made by the parent company Google to other products. The recently introduced "Trends" feature is very explanatory because it comes after a week or so since the search giant improved the stand-alone service Trends to show live data about the search queries conducted through the main technology.

Although Google Reader was released on October 7, 2005, it is still a part of the Google Labs, the testing platform that provides access to all the applications before they are released as a final product and available to all users.
