The new service requires Windows XP/2000, minimum 56K (broadband reccommended); Mac and Linux users can connect to Google Talk using other IM clients, developed by third parties.
Also, the service is in beta and requires a Gmail username and password.
It's not a telephony service and can't be used for emergency dialing.
