In the future you might be able to make a smartwatch out of your handset

The mania of the 2-in-1 device is currently deeply woven into our collective subconscious. It has been planted there by tech manufacturers that love to offer us devices that can be more than one thing.

We’re talking about things like tablet/laptop hybrids or smartphone/tablets combos. But given the fact that the tech world is heavily obsessed with smartwatches, it shouldn't come as a surprise if a mix between a smartphone and a smartwatch makes its way into the wild, at some point.

Actually, such a gizmo has already arrived in the form of a concept. It might sound counter intuitive to think about it, at first, but the guys over at 91mobiles.com have provided us with a set of images showing that such a device doesn't necessarily belong to the Sci-Fi realm.

The gadget envisioned by the concept artists belongs to the Nexus family and is essentially a smartphone that can be turned into a smartwatch, meaning it can wrap around the wearer’s wrist.

The phone per se makes use of a 5-inch full HD display with a 2.40:1 ratio aspect (quite strange but that’s what we’re being told). Under the hood lies a Snapdragon 801 CPU, which is a 2.5GHz chip fitted with 3GB of RAM, and 64GB/128GB of internal storage.

The handset comes equipped with a 16MP rotating tube camera on board, boasting LED flash and a special image stabilization software.

The phone is capable of doing 4K video recording, a feature that will certainly pique the interest of a lot of users out there. Other specs include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and 4G LTE. Nexus 360 also incorporates a biometric fingerprint scanner that lives in the Home button.

Now, for the smartwatch-related capabilities. The 2-in-1 device also has an optical heart rate monitor placed towards the back and is IP67 certified, meaning its waterproof.

In order to be able to bend the smartphone and transform it into a smartwatch, Nexus 360 uses a flexible polymer OLED display.

The tube camera is an especially nifty accessory, allowing you to take pictures from your wrist, so the sensor is not positioned at weird angles against the subject you want to shoot.

The smartwatch looks a tad bulky in the renders, but that’s due to the smartphone screen, which could have slimmed down a little bit.

Anyway, given that devices such as the LG G Flex are already a reality, we don’t see why the Nexus 360 might not become a real life device some day.
