Sh*t happens

In a gala yesterday, Google Maps won the Best Web Application prize along with Facebook - rivalry at the top, that of Google and Facebook. Unfortunately, the award was almost destroyed because the forces of evil were out to get the unlucky man who went on stage and accepted it.

A black day indeed, as Raul Vera, Engineering Manager, made his way to the gala event that had imposed the "Suited and Booted" attire for men and "Dressed to Impress" for women. As a natural consequence he went for the suit because he probably would have made an awkward first impression had he gone for the dress. I don't know, I'm just guessing.

As he says in The Official Google Australia Blog, "the awards ceremony was great. The wine hit the spot, the food good, and the people at our table friendly. When the Google Maps award was announced, I went up to accept it and was photographed with the magazine editor, just as I was meant to, then came back and sat down."

After the end and after some minor inconveniences regarding transportation, his attire keeping him from bringing his "grotty" backpack to the gala, he decided to go home via train, caught it in time and started reading his book while placing the umbrella, the PC Authority issue where the award winners were mentioned and the award next to him. "When we reached my station, I plopped the book onto the pile and picked up the lot by basically wrapping it all up in the magazine, then got off the train. Except the award is heavy, the magazine is slick, and the book was one thing too many. The award slid out the front and fell, pointy end down, onto the train platform, which is made of concrete. Oops." Check the picture on the left to see the results of that.

His conclusion? he blames it on the suit, which is not for engineers. "If God had wanted engineers to wear suits, he would have given us social skills and motor coordination."
