Released and then quickly retracted, Google Latitude is now back in the iTunes App Store as a free download for anyone who owns an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), or iPad, running iOS 4.0 or later.

While those are the requirements to download and install Google Latitude on your iOS device, there’s nothing else stopping you from enjoying a service that lets you stay in touch with friends and family by making it easy to share where you are and see each other on a map.

According to Google, with Latitude, you can:

- See your friends on a map – find out who’s nearby and meet up. - Share your location continuously with whomever you choose – help friends and family stay in touch with you, even when you can’t take out your phone. - Control your privacy – share only city-level location, hide your location, or turn off background updating at any time

Even when the application is closed, or the device screen is locked, background updating ensures that Latitude is constantly listening for updates, while sharing your location in the background.

Remember that Latitude is completely opt-in, which means you must enable it before you can start sharing your location. You can disable it at any time, though.

Because this is the heart of Google Latitude, the minimum requirement is an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4 or above.

Users can also enjoy Latitude from their computer at google.com/latitude to see where their friends are.

Additionally, users can turn on optional apps like Google Location History for a personal history dashboard.

Google Latitude supports the following languages: English, Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian.
