Google is taking us back to our childhood today with a gorgeous series of doodles dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish author famous for his children's stories, who would have celebrated his 205th birthday today. And Google is not stopping at just one doodle, as it would normally do, the homepage features a series of five images each depicting one of Andersen's famous stories.

Andersen is one of the most cherished children's authors and there's hardly anyone alive today, at least in Europe and North America, who hasn't heard or read at least one of his stories. And, if reading isn't as popular today as it once was, though that's probably not entirely true, certainly not as much as some would have you believe, his stories have been adapted and retold countless times in animations, movies and so on. Works like The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Match Girl, The Little Mermaid or The Ugly Duckling hardly need any explanation, everyone has heard them, one way or another.

Now, 205 years after the author was born, Google chose to mark the occasion and picked five of his stories to feature with perhaps the best art the search engine has ever adorned its homepage, one of the most visited websites online. You can check out all the images below if you can't see them on Google's homepage.

Interestingly, the doodles are also present on the homepage redesign, which was just rolled out yesterday, signaling that Google is getting close to unveiling one of the biggest, and arguably the most visually appealing, redesigns of its bread-and-butter search engine. So, if you're feeling left out because you're still getting the plain, old, boring Google homepage, don't worry, it probably won't be long now. In the meantime, you can check out some screenshots over here.
