The update will be offered in stages, as usual

A few days ago, we told you that after months of being stuck on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, Google’s latest tablet, the Nexus 9, was reportedly getting the minor Android 5.0.2 increment.

But that didn't satisfy owners of the tablet, who were disappointed, angry or just flat-out confused by the search giant’s decision. After all, the latest Android 5.1.1 build had been offered to every other Nexus tablet out there, except the Nexus 9.

Nevertheless, not so long ago, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the Nexus 7 2013 (LMY57W) and Nexus 9 (LMY47S) was spotted on Google’s own Android audio latency info page.

Since the build is already available for the Nexus 7, we told you that it shouldn't take long for the Nexus 9 to get it too. And we weren't wrong to say that.

Nexus 9 finally gets the latest software treatment

First on Twitter and then on Google Plus, Google itself has confirmed that the Android 5.1.1 OTA update for the Nexus 9 will start rolling out immediately.

However, as is often the case with such updates coming out of the Mountain View company, we should expect it to arrive gradually, which means some Nexus 9 users might get it sooner than others, based on location. So you might be looking at a few weeks of waiting time before your Nexus 9 gets the Android 5.1.1 treatment.

Google has yet to release the factory images for the tablet, so you’ll need to wait for the OTA to reach you.

Compared to the Nexus 5.0, the 5.1.1 version of Lollipop doesn't bring anything out of this world, although it does add some nifty feats such as allowing users to join Wi-Fi networks and join Bluetooth devices directly from the Quick Settings menu.

Google is also squashing a lot of bugs with the new update, which is good news for owners of the Nexus 9.

Google’s delay in bringing the latest Android updates to the Nexus 9 might have something to do with the fact that the flagship tablet is the only Nexus product to sport a 64-bit chipset (NVIDIA Tegra K1). Hopefully, that’s no longer a problem and all Nexus 9 models will be updated without strains.
