The Mac version of downloadable application Google Desktop was recently improved and made available for all users for free. The 1.0.3.301 version comes with a lot of new updates, offering an improved functionality for all the Mac OS X users looking for an alternative for the famous Spotlight. Beside a shorter crawl-time after restart and improved Updater security model, the latest Google Desktop for Mac brings compatibility with Camino 1.5, an excellentbrowser for the Apple operating system. According to the release notes, the Google engineers bundled numerous bug fixes that are meant to correct older issues and improve the performance of the program. For example, the errors encountered while we were using Google Desktop for Mac were quite annoying, so the Mountain View company fixed "several critical bugs that would cause the machine to either crash or become unresponsive, especially when using Google Toolbar in Firefox."

"Just wanted to let everyone know about a new update for Google Desktop for the Mac. We've been reading your emails, blogs, and comments, so we focused this update on making Google Desktop faster and fixing the bugs that we hear the most about. We have also updated Google Updater in this release with a lot of great bug fixes," Rose Yao, Mac Product Manager, said today.

As always, the updated version of Google Desktop for Mac can be downloaded from Softpedia as a stand-alone package or can be obtained through the auto-update feature included in most of the Google offline tools. Additionally, the release notes are available on this link.

Since its release date, Google Desktop for Mac was regarded as a main competitor for Spotlight, the search tool introduced by Apple in Mac OS X version 10.4. Obviously, some of the users are criticizing the Google release, sustaining that Spotlight represents the best search utility for the Apple systems and no additional application must be installed to improve its performance.
