Google is making the first steps in monetizing the +1 button and Google+, while, at the same time, providing an interesting tool to advertisers, the +1 button for display ads. In the next few weeks, Google will start adding the +1 button with display ads from the Google Display Network.

Visitors will be able to +1 the ad to recommend it to their friends. If the same ad is then displayed to any of their friends, which it is more likely to because of the recommendations, they will see that it has been +1'd by a friend.

It's hard to overstate the importance of this move and how powerful this type of ads could be.

The hard part is getting someone to +1 your ad, but if they do, the ad is guaranteed to perform significantly better than a regular, non-social ad.

"Starting early October we’re expanding that to include display ads across the web on both desktop and mobile," Eider Oliveira, senior software engineer at Google, announced.

"For the first time, you’ll be able to run social-enabled ad campaigns that work across millions of sites in over 40 countries around the world," Google explained.

"If you’re running display ads through the Google Display Network you may begin seeing the +1 button and personal annotations with your ads," it announced.

+1 display ads work the same way the +1 button works for anything else online. If users find an ad useful, or believe that it may be relevant to their friends, they can click the +1 button.

Their friends will then see that the ad has a +1 recommendation, a great sign of trust. The +1 recommendation also makes it more likely that the ad will be displayed for friends since it will be included in any automated auction for ads those friends receive through the Google Display Network.
