The bundled PDF plugins are giving developers a headache

The Google Chrome 6 beta is one step closer as the Google team has released a second update to the dev channel build in just a few days. Google Chrome 6.0.472.14 dev is out and, as you can expect, there aren’t that many changes from the previous build.

But there are a lot of small fixes as the Chrome team is working on ironing out the most annoying bugs to bring the build up to beta quality, which, by Google standards, is close to what others might consider stable builds. The beta is still a few builds away probably as there are some lingering bugs affecting the UI and other areas.

“The Dev channel has been updated to 6.0.472.14 for All Platforms. All: UI tweaks and clean up; Additional stability fixes. Linux: PDF Plugin does not load. Mac: PDF plugin does not load,” the short announcement read.

The PDF plugin Google recently introduced has been giving the team quite a lot of headaches. The idea is sound, have built-in support for PDF files to ensure that users don’t have to load external plugins which may be unsafe, the Adobe Reader plugin has been known for its security vulnerabilities, and which may also consume more resources than they should.

The integrated PDF support is clearly not on par with Adobe Reader or even with other existing PDF plugins, but it’s good enough to check out a PDF file without having to fire up the full viewer. However, there have been problems ever since it was introduced and it stopped working altogether in the latest dev builds for Linux and Mac users.

When clicking on a link to a PDF file users would be greeted by the “Missing plugin” message despite the fact that the plugin was enabled. Google has been working on fixing the issue, yet the plugin still doesn’t work properly, at least on Linux, in the latest dev update.
