A new Dev channel update brings Google Chrome closer to a stable version. The latest release, 6.0.472.0, has been issued only for Windows and Linux platforms at the moment, with a Mac build soon to follow. Three of the issues tackled by this release affected all the platforms Google Chrome targets, with the most important one being the fix of the bug that crashed the browser on SSL client authentication pages.

Also eliminated from the bug list is the problem with downloading large files. Earlier Dev channel updates would have trouble downloading larger files and would stop before 40MB. The issue had been successfully reproduced and reported for multiple releases, and, as of this version, it has been eliminated.

Other fixes available for all platforms remedy the browser crash when navigating to a page that required client authentication with SSL. Also, option clicking a link now saves a resource directly, without triggering a “Save As...” dialog. Shooting down essential bugs in each Dev channel update, Google Chrome is heading towards releasing a stable version 6 of the browser. However, there still are issues to fix, and among known ones is the failure of the PDF plugin to load on Linux. More details about additional changes are available in the svn log of all revisions.

Together with the web browser, Google Chrome Frame has also been updated to the latest release. The add-on has been specially created for Internet Explorer and is designed to bring the benefits of open web technologies and JavaScript performance improvements into Microsoft’s web browser.

On the same Google Chrome update note, the developers of Chromium, the portable version of the Google web browser, have also updated their release, bringing it to 6.0.474.0. The portable edition of Chrome is specially designed for users that need to carry the speediness of the browser on an USB stick and use it on any computer they plug the device into.
