New name for the future expansion

Halo has certainly been one of the defining series for the whole Xbox line of consoles. It placed players in the body armor of a futuristic soldier, named Master Chief, who fought for humanity's right for survival against the evil aliens from the Covenant. It took console shooters to new heights in terms of gameplay and controls, and pushed the Xbox and Xbox 360 to the top of the sales charts.

The latest title in the series, Halo 3, broke all sales records and gave the Xbox 360 the advantage it needed over the Arch rival, the PlayStation 3. Although it was a very successful game, fans of the beloved shooter franchise got relatively bored with the singleplayer, and while the multiplayer aspect was very solid, with the game being played even today, something new was needed. This something new was developed by Bungie, the studio responsible for the Halo games, and it was announced as an expansion to Halo 3 some time ago, being entitled Halo 3: Recon.

It will usher in some changes to the series, as players won't be fighting as Master Chief, but as a shock trooper, who will be tasked with a reconnaissance mission in the city New Mombasa, which is occupied by the Covenant. This thing made the Halo 3: Recon name quite fitting, right? Well, after some careful thought, the team at Bungie decided that a new name might work better than Recon, so the company recently announced that the new expansion would be called Halo 3: ODST.

This acronym stands for Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, category which designs the main character of this new experience, and is, in the eyes of the team, more fitting to the whole adventure. "This new title is a more straightforward account of the experience that awaits and the role you will assume as you explore the streets of New Mombasa," reads the official press release from Bungie.

While this change may not be very important, it does seem a bit more fitting, as the ODSTs are special units, which appeared in the former Halo titles as units that were sent deep into enemy territory in order to gather information. But sadly, no new details have accompanied this press release, so Halo fans need to keep their ears open as Bungie might release new information as time goes by.

For those of you who don't know, Halo 3: ODST will be released in the fall season of 2009, and will certainly be met with eager anticipation by a lot of fans.
