It's only natural that when some company dominates a certain market, there are some others who follow at close range, trying to bring down the leader. And that's exactly the situation in the case of the mobile e-mail market, dominated for a long time by the Canadian company Research In Motion through its product, the famous BlackBerry.

The race to take down the BlackBerry has intensified this week, considering that Sprint Corp. has introduced rival options from Good Technology Inc. and Seven Networks Inc., as reported by Globe and Mail.

Good, whose products are similar to those that Research In Motion made famous with its BlackBerry device and service, said it will now work with directly with telecommunications provider Sprint. Good's services were previously available to Sprint business customers only through third-party suppliers.

Good, which last month has also signed on Cingular Wireless to sell its service, also says it is adapting its software to work with corporate e-mail systems based on IBM Lotus Notes and Domino in addition to Microsoft Exchange.

Devices now available through Sprint for use with the Good service include its Sprint PCS Smart Device Treo 650, made by PalmOne, and the Sprint PCS Smart Device PPC 6600/6601, made by Audiovox.

It remains to be seen whether RIM will be able to hold its position as the market leader or at some point, someone else will finally be able to take the mobile e-mail crown from the Canadians.
