George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin were married this summer in a highly mediated, star-studded ceremony in Venice, Italy, but they’ve been keeping a rather low profile since. Sunday night, at the Golden Globes 2015, they made their red carpet debut as a married couple.
That alone would have been enough to get them plenty of attention, but Amal’s choice of accessory is also getting a lot of people talking online: white gloves from her personal collection.
Channeling old-school glamor
Amal looked flawless on the red carpet: she wore a Dior Haute Couture black gown with a statement belt and one-shoulder cape that trailed behind her, matched with a white clutch (with a “Je Suis Charlie” pin on it) and elbow-length white gloves.
She wore her hair down, partially hiding the 29.62-carat diamond earrings by Harry Winston, and kept it simple with the makeup, except for a bolder lip.
Though some fashion insiders believe the gloves were overkill, there’s no doubting the whole vibe she was going for: old-school, glamourous, elegant. She also probably thought she needed something to make the dress “pop.”
However, once inside, she had the gloves removed: it was hot already in the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, what with the humid and rising temperatures and the AC not being on. This should explain why most stars in the room were fanning themselves with whatever they could and looked very shiny in the face.
The gloves are this year’s Angelina Jolie Leg Pose
George Clooney joked on the red carpet that Amal had sewn the gloves that very morning because “she is very handy,” but she admitted that they came from her personal collection.
She didn’t name the designer who created them, but she didn’t have to for the Internet to take notice of them. Amal’s gloves are getting as much attention online as Angelina Jolie half-fierce half-ridiculous leg pose got at the Oscars 2012.
They even have their own Twitter account, several of them.
Amal’s fashion statement is striking a chord with industry people and industry watchers who believe Hollywood is lacking the glamour of yore, and they say that she delivered just this type of elegance by pairing the white gloves with the Dior gown.
Of course, there are also those who believe that they were “tacky” or even an “overkill,” or ridiculous because the Golden Globes is not the kind of ceremony you get dressed up for like this.
The bottom line is that, whether she aimed to do so or not, Amal and her gloves stole her husband’s thunder, precisely on the night when he was honored with the Cecile B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
Amal and those Dior gloves say, "I don't want to touch these Hollywood underlings, George. I'm an international barrister." #GoldenGlobes
