A sailor competing for Sweden, training with his team for the America's Cup died on Wednesday in a freak accident.

Andrew "Bart" Simpson became trapped under the team's boat when it capsized, and died while he was blocked underwater for 10 minutes.

According to WLS-TV, the Artemis racing team, made up of 11 people, were sailing on an AC72 catamaran at roughly 1 p.m. when the boat rolled over under heavy winds. The crew faced 25 and 35 mph (40-56 kph) winds at the time.

36-year-old Simpson, of the UK, was an experienced sailor who had already won two gold medals. Once he was stuck underneath the boat, he lost consciousness and rescue teams getting him out couldn't save him.

"That person was submerged for 10 minutes and eventually rescued by crew members," San Francisco Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White explains.
