With the industry moving towards the adoption of new, faster and more energy-efficient solutions, the newly founded GLOBALFOUNDRIES, has taken its time to showcase some of its early achievements, including 45nm, 32nm and 28nm manufacturing processes. These technologies were recently caught on video, demonstrating the company's commitment in delivering support for the latest solutions in the industry.

In a recent news-article on tweaktown, Tom Sonderman, vice president of Manufacturing Systems and Technology of GLOBALFOUNRIES, showcased some of the company's early achievements, including the upcoming 45nm Istanbul chips. In addition to AMD's next-generation Opteron processors, Sonderman also showcased 32nm for embedded and graphics segments, as well as a low-power 28nm bulk DRAM wafers, which will be used for wireless networks and handheld devices. These technologies are to account for the company's current and future product lineup, offering support to AMD's next-generation chips, as well as for various products coming from the company's other partners.

Although the 45nm process is already used for AMD's current Istanbul server chips, the 32nm and 28nm production isn't slated to start until early next year. Sonderman also stated that for 32nm products, GLOBALFOUNDRIES would take design orders starting in the second half of this year, while the first 32nm products would surface in 2010. For 28nm, design orders will be taken in early 2010, while products are expected to become available later on.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES was announced in early March 2009, as a new semiconductor manufacturing company spawned out of the joint venture between AMD and Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC). Led by key members in AMD's staff, like Doug Grose and Hector Ruiz, the company is aimed at providing its partners with support for the latest manufacturing technologies. After the launch of the new semiconductor company, AMD announced that it would continue to play a key role in GLOBALFOUNDRIES, at the same time being the company's largest consumer.
