Where before she wouldn’t even be invited to attend fashion shows, let alone be asked to pose for Vogue, today she can command attention from all sides and all she has to do is just be herself. Kim Kardashian has been transformed into our modern Marilyn Monroe, as Kanye is so fond of saying, and she has Kanye and designer Riccardo Tisci to thank for.
Tisci and Givenchy facilitated Kim’s entrance into the fashion world
Needless to say, Kim Kardashian probably wore Givenchy since the day she realized she could afford it, but she never did it to critical acclaim and she never had the star power to turn an outfit into an iconic one.
Today, she can do just that.
Riccardo Tisci, the current designer for the fashion house and a close friend of Kanye’s (rumor also has it that they’re secret lovers and keep an apartment for all romantic rendezvous in Paris), first put Kim in that horrible floral gown with matching sandals and gloves at the MET Gala in 2013, the one that earned her many comparisons to grandma’s couch.
He’s been dressing her ever since, either for her TV appearances and daily errands, or for big fashion-related events. Tisci believed in Kim when no one else would, and he was one of the first industry people to actually give her a chance: that’s because she’s like family to him, he says in a new interview with Details Magazine.

Turning Kim into a fashion icon wasn’t easy at first, Tisci continues. There was hell to pay for him in the industry for befriending and dressing her, thus putting his image in the balance for her - a reality star who’d gotten her start in showbiz in the most shameful manner, by making and releasing her own adult tape.
He dressed her whenever Kanye asked and he even designed their wedding outfits. Tisci says he only puts his reputation on the line like that for friends, for the people he loves so much as to consider them his “family.” Kim and Kanye are definitely that.
“Nobody [accepted her],” Tisci says. “And she’s a sweet girl. And Kanye and me, we did it together. Every designer is dying to dress her now. I didn’t care what people thought about Kim. In the beginning, I met her because of my respect for Kanye, and then I liked her a lot and we became friends. I got killed because of this. But I didn’t care. That is a friend, you see.”
