The wardrobe malfunction had nothing to do with the cape

Madonna performed her latest single, “Living for Love,” at the Brit Awards 2015 last week, but what made all the headlines was the fact that she was yanked down a set of stairs by one of her backup dancers.

She later blamed the fall on a wardrobe malfunction, because her Armani cape had been tied too tight. Giorgio Armani is determined to make the world understand that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the cape. It was Madonna’s fault.

Madonna had the cape altered

#MadonnaFall was a trending topic for many hours after her fall was broadcast on TV. After she confirmed she was ok, the Internet turned her mishap into a hilarious meme, which is usually the way these things go.

On a later TV appearance, the singer explained that her people had tied the cape too tight because it was so heavy that they feared it would slip off her shoulders before the moment it was supposed to come off.

“So here I am marching in like a queen, and I got to the top of the stairs and I pulled my silky string, and it would not come undone. And my two lovely Japanese dancers basically strangled me off the stage. I had a choice: I could either be strangled or fall with the cape, and I fell,” she said.

There’s no denying that Madonna handled the incident admirably, but the way in which she’s portraying it as if the cape was at fault doesn’t sit well with Giorgio Armani.

In a statement cited by the Daily Mail, he says Madonna wouldn’t have fallen if she’d stuck with the original design of the cape.

“This cape had a hook and she wanted a tie, and she wasn't able to open it with her hands. That's all there is to it,” he says. “Madonna, as we all know, is very difficult.” Oh snap.

Fall was a PR stunt, conspiracy theorists claim

Of course, there are also those who claim that the fall was a carefully orchestrated PR stunt meant to get Madonna more exposure and sympathy from the public. She is simply too much of a perfectionist not to have seen it coming during rehearsals.

This theory is probably a stretch, if only for the reason that, being the perfectionist she is, Madonna would never opt to have people see her tumbling down stairs helpless during live shows, if she had that choice.

Still, the incident did help boost her profile by getting her more attention and something very hot to talk about during promotion for her upcoming album, “Rebel Heart.” If you factor in her not getting hurt, she definitely had a lot to win from this.

Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight! But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I'm fine! ❤️#livingforlove A photo posted by Madonna (@madonna) on Feb 25, 2015 at 2:50pm PST
