Vodafone Australia is yet another mobile phone carrier in the world which started to release the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system update for the owners of a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 smartphone on its airwaves.

The handset is running under Google's Android 2.1 operating system flavor at the moment, after being launched on shelves with the Android 1.6 OS version.

However, the handset vendor announced earlier this year that they planned on making the new Gingerbread OS version available for the X10 devices around the world, and they already started to push the update out.

Unbranded handsets were the first to receive it, and units available via various carriers around the world are also tasting the update now, with Vodafone Australia being one of those companies which began their release.

Some of the main features that the new OS upgrade comes along with will include:

- Facebook inside Xperia – Facebook integration with apps, phonebook and calendar - Wi-Fi Hotspot - USB tethering - Music player with equalizer - Photo widget – one click access to the photo gallery app. Users interested in downloading and installing the new software update should know that it was made available via the Sony Ericsson PC Companion, and that it can be downloaded directly from the handset vendor.

“Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will be available to download from Sony Ericsson FROM August 30, 2011 (European timings),” the wireless carrier announced.

The software will bring the Android 2.3.3 OS flavor on Xperia X10 handsets, Vodafone announced. The update weighs in at around 130MB.

Following the update, the baseband version on Xperia X10 smartphones at Vodafone will be 2.1.71, while the build number is 3.0.1.G.0.75.

With the PC Companion software installed on the PC, users will need to connect the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 via a USB cable. As soon as the phone is connected, the application will offer info on the software updates available for download.

The Sony Ericsson PC Companion is available for download from Softpedia as well, via this link.
