LG Optimus One is definitely the most popular entry-level Android smartphone in the world and LG's best-selling handset in the last few years.

However, the Optimus One was delivered with Android 2.2 (Froyo), which is now obsolete, especially if we take into consideration the fact that Google prepares to launch the next-generation Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

In this regard, LG decided to push the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade to all Optimus One devices, beginning May.

LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.”

Although no release time frame has been disclosed at that time, most of the countries where the device was launched have already gotten the update, save a few.

According to the guys over at Androidos.in, Optimus One owners living in India can now download and install the Gingerbread update.

Gingerbread for Optimus One has yet to be officially confirmed in India, but reports from users indicate that the Korean handset manufacturer has started to roll out the update today.

Unfortunately, the update is not pushed OTA (over the air), instead Optimus One owners need to download and install the latest version of LG software update tool to be able to update their smartphone to the latest Gingerbread operating system.

Aside from changing the firmware version to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, the update brings the following changes:

- Improved system performance; - Improved battery life; - Support for more Android apps; - Better user experience.

Androidos.in also states that the update might be available in other Asian countries as well, but this has yet to be confirmed by users.
