Jellyfish like this one might one day patrol our seas and oceans

Specialists working with the Virginia Tech College of Engineering have recently introduced the general public to their latest creation: a giant robotic jellyfish named Cyro.

The jellyfish measures precisely 5 foot 7 inches (1.69 meters) in length, and tips the scale at 170 pounds (77.11 kilograms). Sources say that the jellyfish is actually a prototype, meaning that what the researchers actually wish to build is self-powering, autonomous machines that can be used to keep a close eye on aquatic environments.

More precisely, such machines would be in charge of collecting information concerning aquatic life, the geography of ocean floors, and the dynamics of ocean currents.

“We hope to improve on this robot and reduce power consumption and improve swimming performance as well as better mimic the morphology of the natural jellyfish,” specialist Alex Villanueva said.
