If you’ve been looking for a new notebook that you can use in some of the harshest of environments, you have probably already come across one of those Thoughbooks from Panasonic. Nevertheless, despite their impressive reputation, these portable computers aren't the only rugged notebooks on the market. As a matter of fact, Getac has recently introduced a new rugged portable system that can pass for both a notebook and a tablet PC.

The company's new V100 system has been designed to take advantage of the improvements brought by Intel's Core 2 Duo technology. This is why it can be equipped with an Intel ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) Core 2 Duo U7600 processor, running at 1.2GHz and boosting the system's overall performance. In addition, the rugged V100 is also equipped with Intel's 945GMS graphics with 128MB of shared memory.

The portable system is featured with 1GB of DDR2 memory, which can be extended to a maximum of 2GB. It offers 120GB of storage space, which is also expandable to 250GB. One of the system's rugged features is a shock-mounted removable hard disk drive. Furthermore, the V100 is also equipped with full magnesium alloy case, scaled ports and connectors, and is compliant with military standard MIL-STD 810F and IP54. All these features ensure a fully rugged portable system that can deliver an impressive performance in working environments where standard systems would easily break down.

As far as connectivity goes, the V100 is featured with a modem, Intel Wireless 802.11 a/b/g card, Bluetooth and optional HSDPA. Other features include a built-in SD card reader, Kensington lock, and TPM 1.2 (Trusted Platform Module) for security.

Getac's V100 is offered in both 10.4-inch and 12.1-inch form factors, with a weight of 2.2kg and 2.45kg, respectively. Both models sport a 6-cell Li-Ion smart battery, but a 9-cell battery is available as an option.
