iPhone 3GS unlockers advised to grab key files for future hacks

In its most recent blog update, the iPhone Dev Team reveals that PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X now supports the 3.1.2 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 2G / 3G / 3GS and iPod Touch 1G / 2G (iPod touch 3G not supported yet). Additional notes are made in the post, including an important piece of advice for iPhone 3GS users who may want to unlock their devices in the future while still running the latest firmware version from Apple.

“Note for 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x,” the fourth paragraph of the Dev Team’s post entitled “Pwnage Pie” begins. “This version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS.” the team reveals. “It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found by chronicdev, geohot, and our very own gray.  Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the ‘jailbreak train’ in all future updates. For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!),” the message ends.

A summary of the whole post is also offered on the Dev Team’s blog. According to the hackers, the iPhone 3GS (iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw) is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4, as well as if you’ve upgraded to 3.1.x using iTunes. The second-generation iPod touch (iPod2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw) is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4, but you must already be jailbroken, according to the Dev Team. Lastly, the team sadly informs third-gen iPod touch (iPod3,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw) users that their devices are not supported by PwnageTool 3.1.4.
