The announcement that TBS would not renew George Lopez’s show, Lopez Tonight, for a third season took his fans by surprise, but perhaps none was as shocked as Lopez himself. Still, on the night before the last, he still found it in himself to joke about it.

Lopez opened last night’s show with a monologue about the reasons TBS fired him, saying it was because he was Latino – and ended up comparing himself to Charlie Sheen, as a jest.

It’s all in the name of good fun, though. Regardless of what reports in the press might say, Lopez does have a backup plan, as he also revealed last night and the video below can confirm.

“In case you didn’t hear the news, TBS has decided not to renew Lopez Tonight. Unemployment is at an all-time high for Latinos and now it’s a little higher,” Lopez kicked off the show by saying.

However, there’s a silver lining to the cloud above his head as well: after lending his voice to one of the characters in Sony’s animated “The Smurfs,” he will reprise the part for the sequel.

“Sony announced they’re doing a sequel to the Smurfs movie… so today I lost some work because I’m brown, but also I got some work because I’m blue,” George joked.

As for what the future holds for him, Lopez says, “Like every TV star before me, I’m going to find some crack, get on the pipe,” taking a not too subtle swipe at Charlie Sheen, who was fired from “Two and a Half Men” for his substance abuse problems.

The Goddesses, though, that’s a different matter, Lopez continues, still pushing the Sheen joke. They left him and he’s losing his teeth, he says.

Then, on a more serious note, the comedian goes on to speak of the dates fans will be able to catch him on tour.
