Gemalto, a worldwide leading provider of digital security solutions, announced today that its UpTeq mobile TV SIM card has earned the security certification that is in accordance with the SIMalliance Security Guidelines, which are applicable to Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Mobile Broadcast Services Enabler Suite (BCAST) Smart Card Profile (SCP) mobile television products.

The fact that Gemalto's UpTeq mobile TV SIM card has received the certification comes to show to mobile operators that the solution is able to provide the needed high levels of security in the mobile digital television area. At the same time, the company's solution would also be able to help mobile television take off.

The OMA BCAST, a worldwide recognized standard for mobile TV, has been designed to facilitate the integration of an end-to-end mobile television system. The standard specifies a “Smart Card Profile” (SCP), which would actually be the SIM-based Conditional Access System (CAS).

The Gemalto UpTeq SIM card is the first one in the world to meet the requirements of the SIMalliance Security Guidelines, which have been defined upon security analysis, common security methodology, as well as third-party laboratory evaluation. According to the company, the evaluation of the solution was conducted by the LETI security center in Grenoble (France), which is part of the Information Technologies Security Evaluation Facilities (ITSEF).

“The OMA BCAST specification is now ready, and this is the right technological choice for successful deployments. Having met the SIMalliance security recommendations, Gemalto illustrates its commitment to providing products based on standards, and with a high level of security,” commented Gabrielle Bugat, head of Mobile TV business group at Gemalto. “Now, all the required interoperability and security conditions are fulfilled to ensure take-off of the mobile TV market in the coming months.”

Gemalto will showcase its UpTeq SIM card at the Mobile World Congress, which starts today in Barcelona.
