Looks like connectivity-experts Gefen are on a wireless roll lately. Thus, after announcing yesterday the immediate availability of their wireless USB connector, the company came back for a second punch, and announced the Wireless HDMI Extender, a device that will allow users to extend audio/video playback sans any wires up to a distance of around 10 meters (33 feet).

The device from Gefen provides support for HD resolutions (480p, 720p, and 1080i), as well as full digital and analog audio, which allows users to connect a wide range of devices, ranging from satellite set top boxes to HD players and gaming consoles. Moreover, the signal sources can also transmit through walls, thus providing the necessary support for multiple-room setups, and achieve data transfer rates of up to 480 Mbps, quite enough for streaming even the most demanding of HD signals.

The extender is completely compliant and interoperable with the HDMI v1.2a specification, and also supports the ADI JPEG 2000 visual lossless compression format. Moreover, the bandwidth reservation is guaranteed (Full Quality of Service (QoS) based on WiMedia Alliance MAC specification).

The Wireless HDMI Extender has quite a high level of error-resiliency, as the wavelet transform provides high-quality image under varying channel conditions, and also incorporates a dynamic bit rate adjustment system that provides predictable, on-the-fly control of channel bandwidth consumption. And speaking of bandwidth, it's worth mentioning the fact that the device includes a Tzero RF radio chipset, works on the 3.1 - 4.8 GHz frequency band, and, as I mentioned earlier, can attain data rates of 53.3 to 480 Mbps.

The device is not a lot bigger than an ordinary router, for example, as it measures just around 22.22 cm x 14.92 cm x 4.12 cm, at a weight of around 2.72 kilograms (6 pounds). It is not available for purchase right now, but the potential customers can pre-order it for 600 US dollars, which might seem like a hell-lot of money, but it's not that exaggerated, considering that this device is actually capable of delivering wireless HD.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
