Ladies, it's socks and sandals time... again

Every few years, the "dork as fashion icon" trend makes a comeback on the fashion runways and into our lives, leaving us ladies reeling at the strangeness of some of the pieces of men's clothing and accessories we see paraded down the runways or worn by international style icons. So when the latest menswear collections of iconic designers such as Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga, Miuccia Prada and Stefano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent shamelessly showcased the return of the infamous "socks and sandals" trend, we were all left wondering whether this time around, the revival of the nerd movement might actually be more serious than any previous attempts.

Women have long been fascinated with more "nerdy" yet cute-looking guys who channeled the definitely cool power of not chasing cool, but looking effortlessly at ease with themselves without going into the "overtly groomed" extreme. Thankfully, we're not talking about turned-up jeans hems and horn-rimmed glasses anymore, but something similar is going on in the fashion world right now, a revival of the age-old trend that sees the "fashionable" label stamped on men whose attitude and attire breaks the traditional pattern and spills over into uncharted territory.

Whether we're talking computer geeks wearing shirts with technological jargon or witty sayings on them or simply nerdy-looking guys proudly wearing their loose trousers, shirts and white trainers, being tragically un-hip has never been cooler. Of course, you can't just "buy" an outfit that screams geek chic. True nerdiness is inborn, just like wearing socks and sandals together - one of the worst-ever blunders a man could perpetrate on a woman's common fashion sense. And yet, when both David Beckham and Jake Gyllenhaal were spotted wearing the infamous trend, what more could us ladies say than "talk nerdy to me".
