And it was Capcom's idea to bring them in

This Monday, Capcom held a special event, and while there weren't as many surprises as we might have expected, one showcasing was definitely jaw-dropping. The company released a new trailer for its Xbox 360 Lost Planet 2 game, and the short clip featured a rather familiar cast. While this may not sound all that amazing, since the title is a sequel, so returning characters would be an almost natural occurrence, what was surprising was that the familiar faces weren't part of the Lost Planet franchise. Or even from another Capcom franchise.

The main heroes of the trailer are Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, the big, bad boys of Epic's Gears of War series, so it's only natural that everyone was left with a dumbfounded look on their faces. Capcom is known for its cameo appearances, but it has never went this far, namely to bring in such popular characters from outside of its own products.

As we could expect, the initiative was Capcom's, which contacted Epic and proposed the idea. Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski talked to Kotaku about the strange event and said that, "They [Capcom] contacted us about the cameo and we said 'heck yeah.' We're mutual fans of each other's work and crossovers are darned cool so we sent over the Marcus and Dom models for implementation." And while the visual models have been sent over, this doesn't mean that Lost Planet 2 will necessarily feature anything else from the Gears of War series.

One of the things we might think, or hope, to see ported to Capcom's game would be the control layout, but, according to Bleszinski, the subject was never approached by Capcom, and no talks were made about anything else besides the character models. "I can't speak about the controls for LP2," he said. "Anything else about how it's accessed or used in game remains to be revealed. I'll leave that to Capcom's capable hands."
