The series needs to be more like the Nolan Batman movies than the Schumacher ones

The Gears of War series has become one of the quintessential “dude-bro” franchises out there, according to its creator, Cliff Bleszinski, but he admits that the first intention was to give it a more dramatic feel, like that seen in the Band of Brothers book or the TV mini-series.

Gears of War 1 innovated in terms of gameplay, introducing the cover-based third person shooter mechanic to the world, and its sequels continue the story of protagonist Marcus Fenix who, even if he went through several dramas, always kept his macho attitude, attracting lots of gamers and non-gamers alike.

According to the creator of the series and Epic Games’ Creative Director, Cliff Bleszinski, the “dude-bro” theme of the series, in which characters interact with each other without really expressing their feelings or showing that they’re actual human beings, was an accident.

"I didn't always make these dude-bro games at Epic," Bleszinski told IGN. "The intent was to make [Gears of War] a lot more Band of Brothers and take it a lot more serious."

Band of Brothers followed the story of a group of U.S. soldiers as they fought during World of War II, from their basic training to the tough missions and battles they experience.

Epic wasn’t exactly sure how to portray this kind of experience, according to Bleszinski, so they just shaped the action around the “hulked out” concepts of the game’s characters.

In terms of the future, however, the Epic director is confident that new Gears of War games, whenever they might appear, will adopt a more serious tone, similar to how the Batman movies directed by Christopher Nolan did, in comparison to the ones made by Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher.

"If we get around to ever doing more Gears games, I hope we can continue to drift back more towards a Christopher Nolan type dialogue as opposed to a Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher Batman," Bleszinski added. "But that's way down the line."

While a new Gears of War game isn’t coming anytime soon, especially since Epic is busy with the upcoming Fortnite project, as well as with the creation of the Unreal Engine 4, at least you know it’s going to be a more serious experience.
