Focusing on Borderlands

Development studio Gearbox has been at the center of the news lately for two main reasons, the impending release of its cross between a shooter and a role playing game called Borderlands, which will be quite risky, coming in the face of the behemoth that is Modern Warfare 2, and the fact that Microsoft has firmly denied that the outfit had any involvement in an upcoming Halo franchise title. Now, Gearbox is again making the news as it is talking about creating a videogame based on The Heat, the iconic De Niro and Pacino movie.

The studio talked about a The Heat videogame back at E3 2006 and not much has been heard of it since then even though the project was surely an exciting one. Fortunately, Randy Pitchford, the outspoken leader of Gearbox, recently gave an interview to Gamespot about the project.

He initially referred to The Heat by saying that “In a nutshell, we're nowhere. We have passionate game makers that would love to do it. We've got filmmakers that think it's a great idea that would love to see it done. We have publishing partners that would love to publish it. But we have no time. That's the limiting factor.”

He also talked about how the project came to be and how development on it never got underway because other games, like Brothers in Arms and Borderlands, took over the time and resources of Gearbox. At the end of the interview, he again characterized the project as being on “indefinite hold.”

The good news is that there are people ready to create the game, to publish it and fans ready to buy a videogame showing some fidelity to the movie. Lets' hope that after Borderlands and Aliens are out, Gearbox has the time to bring on The Heat.
