Developer Arrowhead Game Studios and publisher Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment have announced that the upcoming reboot of the classic co-op dungeon crawler Gauntlet will be released on September 3, on the Linux and Windows platforms.

The game will be available for both platforms on Steam, and pre-orders for Gauntlet are already up on Valve's worldwide digital distribution service, rewarding early adopters with a copy of a digital comic, Gauntlet: Darkness Calls.

Various retailers are also offering an array of unique in-game weaponry as additional pre-order bonuses, such as the Reaper's Visage helm and Azkog the Demon Slayer, a gargantuan double-headed axe, offered to Steam customers.

Gauntlet: Darknes Calls is created by DC Entertainment and will focus on the origin story of Morak, the game's prime nemesis, a hooded and nefarious villain. The comic will show how the game's heroes are going through Morak's gauntlet, doing their best to survive in an attempt to recover the Sacred Orb that Morak has stolen.

The game will offer players the choice of four classes, Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie and Elf, and the characters will have to crawl their way through a procedurally generated dungeon in order to succeed in recovering the Sacred Orb.

The four classes are spread out between the classic fantasy trio of melee, ranged, and even more ranged magic adept, with the addition of the Valkyrie, who will play the role of tank.

Gauntlet is based on the cult dungeon crawler of old, and the modernized edition aims to take the arcade action to a whole new level, offering local and online multiplayer that supports up to four players at the same time.

The gameplay has, of course, been enhanced from the classic, now affording players various class combos and distinctive play styles to accommodate every type of player out there, but it will still stay true to the traditional room-by-room exploration format.

Players will slay countless evil creatures while delving into the massive labyrinth, completing various challenges and earning powerful loot to assist them in their quest, complete with power-ups that restore health, unlock doors or bestow magical blessings that bolster the group's combat prowess.

During the initial reveal, Warner Bros has mentioned that Gauntlet will be the first game in their upcoming WB Games Vault, a digital portfolio consisting of upcoming games based on popular Midway and WB brands, as well as completely new IPs.

Gauntlet is coming out for Linux and Windows on September 3, attempting to re-create classic moments of PC gaming.
