Garrett Hedlund is one foot through the door to play Finnick Odair in the sequel to “Hunger Games,” “Catching Fire.” He's already auditioned for the part and made quite an impression, says a new report.

For weeks now, Hedlund's name and that of “Mirror Mirror” hunk Armie Hammer have been linked to the new character in the much-anticipated film, with fans weighing in on behalf of one or the other.

Hedlund is now frontrunner, Lainey Gossip has learned through undisclosed – but admittedly reliable – channels.

“I’m told that Hedlund auditioned for the part of Finnick in Catching Fire for director Francis Lawrence about 10 days ago. It went very well,” LG writes.

“No final decisions yet but interest in Armie Hammer seems to have waned since Hammer wasn’t as enthusiastic about it as Lawrence was about him. Am told they’re still seeing people. But their priority right now isn’t so much casting as it is about getting the script in better shape,” adds the same report.

Hedlund, Hammer, Taylor Kitsch and even Robert Pattinson have been linked to the role so far. Garrett broke on the scene as the leading man in “TRON: Legacy.”
