Just a few years ago GPS navigation devices were something of an luxury item, but now everybody has one either in their car or in their smartphone, Garmin even putting one inside a watch, and not any watch, but the first GPS wristwatch designed specifically for golf, the Approach S1.

Although at a first glance you wouldn't say this is that much different from a regular watch, the Approach S1 comes with all sort of goodies for golfers that are activated by entering the specially designed golf mode.

When selected, this will constantly update the golfer’s actual real-time location in order to monitor individual shot distances, display the hole number and par while also acting as a GPS-enabled odometer helping golfers keep track of the total ground they covered on foot each round as well as measuring the distance of their last shot to improve their game or shore up bragging rights.

The Approach S1 comes preloaded with 14,000-plus U.S. and Canadian courses, so it can display you a list of nearby golf clubs when you feel the need to golf, but don't find yourself in a familiar location.

When it watch mode, the rugged and waterproof Approach S1 can operate up to three weeks without on a single charge (eight hours if the GPS is activated) while also featuring an easy-to-set alarm and automatic time and time zone detection.

“With the Approach S1 golf GPS watch, Garmin has once again created an entirely new category for fitness and outdoor recreation,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales.

“Golfers who want their data and their device as streamlined as possible will find Approach S1 to be a sleek and simple hands-free solution to taking the guesswork out of their game.”
