Irish retailer takes on the competition

As part of plans to secure an even stronger foothold in the European market, high street retailer GameStop has slashed the price of the PlayStation Portable Giga Pack in its Irish stores.

The Giga Pack, which includes a PSP, stand, USB cable and 1GB Memory Stick, officially retails for 309.99 Euros. However, GameStop is now offering the pack for around 275 Euros in Northern Ireland. Stores in the Republic of Ireland are selling the pack for 289 Euros.

According to a Sony spokesperson, the price cut is not the result of a directive from SCEE, but simply a promotional activity by GameStop. "This is an initiative in Eire only, and it appears to be retail led and not through SCEE", said the spokesperson.

However, the initiative is certainly an aggressive move on the part of GameStop, and serves as further evidence of the retail chain's eagerness to get a solid foothold in Europe.
