HBO played it safe to keep the element of surprise and it showed in the ratings

HBO did not reveal that episode 9 of season 3 of “Game of Thrones” would bring about what has been described as the most shocking and bloody wedding ever to be shown on TV, so the ratings for “The Rains of Castamere” were not even close to record-setting.

“‘The Rains of Castamere’ delivered 5.2 million viewers, down slightly from the show’s all-time high set earlier this season of 5.5 million,” Entertainment Weekly reports.

This is explained by the fact that HBO did not actually hype up the episode by including references to the Red Wedding in trailers / teasers and the fact that the show took a one-week break for Memorial Day weekend.

However, there’s a silver lining there as well.

“Expect the ratings to rise for next week’s finale, however, possibly to an all-time high,” EW says.

Above is a preview for episode 10 of the season.
