An Australian 3D Print shop made the Iron Throne a reality

The Game of Thrones bug has been spreading like wild fire among lovers of the fantasy genre and not only.

Surely, the HBO series had a lot to do with the saga’s growing popularity, but now everybody is discussing what Tyrion Lannister will do next or whether Sansa Stark will ever be reunited with her sister and (half) brother.

Since there’s so much talk of Games of Thrones these days, Australian 3D Print shop DoodadDoes came up with the idea of printing a shrunken version of the Iron Throne, which is the central piece around which the saga revolves (found via Reddit).

The small throne can accommodate a kid / baby and we dare hope it’s more comfortable than the original. For those who aren't yet familiar with the story line, the Iron Throne is a royal seat assembled from the myriad of swords of the enemies defeated by King Aegon Targaryen.

The blades were woven into the seat by the King’s dragon, Balerion and were deliberately left to be sharp and dangerous, reflecting Aegon's belief that a ruler should never sit lightly on his throne.

Throughout the series, the throne is heavily disputed by royal families in the kingdom and each major house seems to feel entitled to own it.

Anyway, the 3D kiddie sized version of the throne was built with a lighter purpose in mind and there was no dragon involved while forging it. Honestly!

The replica took over one hundred hours to print and the material used was PLA filament. Ten separate pieces were printed before the throne was assembled in all its glory and everything was printed using a SeeMeCNC Rostock Max.

DoodadDoes owners Isaac and Julie Powell also made a blog post where they offered info on how the 3D model for the throne was created and details about the construction per se.

Apparently, the couple first stumbled on a 3D model on Thingiverse, but sadly, it turned out to be unprintable. So the model had to be basically rebuilt from scratch and this took countless hours of digital editing.

Surely, at this point you might be wondering why not 3D print a fully-fledged Iron Throne, as many fans would certainly love to buy such a piece for their “castle” or at least take a photo siting on it? However, such a printing project would need something along the lines of BigRep One.

But for the time being, we leave you with these fantastic piece of 3D printing and its astonishing level of detail which actually makes it very akin to the real deal.
