UK-based animal charity Blue Cross claims that, all things considered, it is very likely that hit series “Game of Thrones” is to blame for the fact that, between the years 2008 and 2013, the number of abandoned wolf-like dogs increased by about 420%.

More precisely, the organization maintains that, since the release of this series, many people have taken a sudden interest in the idea of owning either a husky or some other large dog that resembles the direwolves featured in “Game of Thrones.”

The trouble is that, shortly after they get one such dog, quite a lot of people realize that they are unable to properly look after it.

This is either because they lack the financial means to do so, or because they have a rather busy schedule and cannot provide their new pet with the love and attention it needs.

Consequently, they find themselves left with no choice except give up the dog, and then cross their fingers hoping that animal charities or other similar groups will manage to find a new home for it.

“Sadly, the ‘have-it-now’ attitude of today's consumer society seems to be the same whether you are buying a handbag or a dog,” says Mandy Jones with Blue Cross, as cited by Odd News.

Furthermore, “Copying your favourite celebrity's hairstyle is one thing, but we really urge people to put a lot more thought into getting a new pet - we see so many animals given up because their owners didn't realise how much time and effort it takes to care for them.”
