A new software update is now available for download for the owners of Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition devices.

Apparently, a series of users have already received the update and announced successful installation, but others have yet to get a taste of it.

The software was pushed to smartphones over-the-air labeled MH5, but it’s no other than the new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean release that has already arrived on HTC One Google Play Edition handsets.

The new firmware sports version number JWR66Y, and is a small one, packing mainly a series security enhancements for the Google Play Edition smartphones, as Android Police notes.

The update will arrive on devices as a 2MB download, yet there’s little info in the manner in which it actually boosts the security of Android 4.3 smartphones.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the same update was made available for download for Nexus handsets several weeks ago.

No other changes were included in the new software release in addition to said security fixes, and users will not sport performance improvements after installing it.

Given that the update has already started to be rolled out, Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition can now check for its availability straight from their handsets.

For that, they will have to go to Settings > About Phone > Software Updates and hit the check now button.

Furthermore, those who would like to grab the update before it is officially released for them can now download it from Google’s servers. The process might not be as simple as installing it OTA, but it will bring the device up to the latest available software for it.

Those who would like to learn more on what the update includes can also head over to Samsung’s Open Source website to grab the kernel source for it.
