Samsung is hard at work with the roll-out of Android 2.2 Froyo for its high-end Galaxy S mobile phone, following last week's official announcement regarding the availability of the solution. Australian users should be getting their taste of Froyo right now via the Kies application, at least this is what wireless carrier Optus announced via Twitter.

The availability of the software via Kies is not something that we should be surprised of, since Samsung announced that its Galaxy S users should receive the solution this way.

“As it’s quite a large file Samsung have made it available to download via their Kies software only,” Optus announced, adding via another tweet that the software update should already be available for download.

Samsung started to roll-out the Android 2.2 OS update for its Galaxy S users at the end of the last week, though it pushed it out officially only for Nordic countries at that time.

However, users interested in getting the OS update on their handsets before Samsung would make it available for them were able to do so through tricking the Kies application into displaying Froyo as available even if they were other markets than the said Nordic countries.

Currently, Australian mobile phone users who own a Galaxy S device should be able to download and install the official solution, as Optus announced.

Those who are not familiar with the process should know that they would have to download and install the Samsung Kies application on a Windows-based PC to get started.

They would have to connect their handset to the PC via a USB cable, and then hit firmware update on the application.

As for the Android 2.2 Froyo update, it should offer users a much better experience on their handsets, with a wide range of performance enhancements included into the mix, as well as with other features.

Those who would like to learn some more info on what the OS upgrade is expected to bring to Galaxy S should take a look at our previous reports on the matter.

Samsung Kies is available for download from Softpedia too, via this link.

I've attached screenshots of Optus' tweets on Android 2.2 for Galaxy S, and you can also check on them here and here. The OS update should have been rolled-out for Australian users, just as the carrier announced.

Update: It appears that Optus was the one to jump the gun on this one, and that the actual OS update won't land until November. Here's what the carrier notes in a comment to an article on ausdroid.net announcing the update, as chaumurky points out in a commet below:

We did make the mistake of saying that the update through Kies was already available and we're sorry to have got your hopes up like that. We got a little carried away amid all the FroYo excitement.

In fact we received 2.2 from Samsung yesterday and we're now in the process of testing it to make absolutely sure it's ready for you guys. We are aiming to have the download available on Samsung's Kies service from early-to-mid November.
