Galaxy S III, the high-end Android-based smartphone that Samsung unveiled to the world at the beginning of this month, arrives on shelves with a polycarbonate casing, the handset vendor has confirmed.

The smartphone managed to impress in all aspects right from the beginning, though there have been some suggesting that it would actually sport a plastic outer cover.

Considering the fact that Samsung launched the Galaxy S III smartphone to be its next flagship device, it came rather as a surprise that the company would use plastic for the phone’s body.

However, it seems that this is not the case, and that those who reviewed the smartphone as being made of plastic were actually wrong.

To set things straight, Samsung themselves confirmed to phoneArena that the phone comes with a polycarbonate cover.

“Polycarbonate is used on the battery cover. Polycarbonate is lightweight, solid and is already being widely used in the mobile industry,” Samsung reportedly stated.

“It was chosen as the best material to represent the minimal organic design of GALAXY S III. Using three layers of high quality, pure and clear polycarbonate, not only is the phone’s aesthetic elevated, but the durability and scratch resistance is maximized.”

The news site also claims that this material should be stronger than plastic in most cases, and that it could also be better than the Kevlar coating that other smartphones feature today.

All in all, it seems that Samsung made sure that Galaxy S III was packed with all the premium materials needed to make it a flagship device.

The handset will arrive on shelves in Europe and other markets around the world at the end of this month, and it is expected to make an official appearance in countries where LTE networks are available starting with June. However, a specific release date for these markets hasn’t been unveiled yet.
