A new Android-based mobile phone has made its way to the airwaves of Australian wireless carrier Telstra, namely the Samsung Galaxy S II.

The handset was made available for pre-order on the carrier's network a few weeks ago, and has just become generally available for purchase at Telstra.

The smartphone features a price tag of $840 if purchased contract free, but was also made available on the carrier's $59 Freedom Connect plan, for $20/mo.

The mobile phone was already made available for purchase via other wireless carriers in the country, but Telstra claims that it would be able to offer far better speeds on its NextG network than on other networks in the country.

While other carriers have had the smartphone available for their customers for several weeks now, Telstra says it chose to delay the release so as to make sure that it can offer the wanted performance on its 850MHz NextG network.

In addition to the fast connectivity capabilities, the Android 2.3 Gingerbread-powered smartphone should offer other great capabilities as well.

For example, it comes to the market with a large 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen display, and features a 1.2GHz application processor inside.

It also comes with 16GB of internal memory, and with a microSD memory card slot that enables users to add up to 32GB of additional storage space into the mix.

On the back, the handset features an 8-megapixel photo snapper, with support for full HD video recording, complemented by a front camera which can be leveraged for video calling.

The Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone also comes to the market with WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, as well as with built-in GPS receiver and with 3.5mm headphone jack.

At Telstra, the smartphone will also take advantage of the newly deployed HD Voice technology. The handset can be seen on the wireless carrier's website here.
