According to the conclusions of a scientific study, a pair of newly-found twin galaxies shares the same properties as the Milky Way, including the fact that they are joined by two dwarf galaxy companies. Our own galaxy is accompanied by the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.

The research used data from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, which managed to image 340,000 galaxies to date. Around 3 percent of the galactic objects seen by this initiative resemble the spiral structure of the Milky Way, Space reports.

“We’ve never found another galaxy system like the Milky Way before, which is not surprising considering how hard they are to spot. It’s only recently become possible to do the type of analysis that lets us find similar groups,” study leader Aaron Robotham explains.

Details of the new discoveries were presented on August 23, at the International Astronomical Union General Assembly, held in Beijing, China.
