With the reveal of the first official gameplay trailer for Grand Theft Auto V the development team at Rockstar is ready to offer some more details about the coming game and its unique mechanics.

Imran Sarwar, a leading missions designer at the studio, tells GameInformer that his team focused on offering a lot of customization options for all in-game vehicles.

He states, "we wanted to expand it and integrate it more deeply into the game so that it would seamlessly slot in with everything else that the player can do in the world. Some missions ask you to customize vehicles in certain ways, and we have taken vehicle customization in general a lot further than we did in San Andreas."

Changing colors or other aspects of a car or bike no longer involves a drive through and the overall number of possible modifications is over 1,000.

In GTA V, gamers will need to locate a LS Customs shop and then take their vehicle in and speak to the mechanics in order to get access to the various options.

Sarwar adds, "In addition to the many cosmetic customization alterations such as body kits, paint jobs/finishes, wheels, exhaust tips, window tints, tire smoke color, bull-bars, extra lights, and lots of other extra accessories, we have modifications that will affect gameplay and vehicle performance."

Gamers will be able to tune brakes, engines, horns, suspensions and add armor and bulletproof tires to any vehicle in order to adapt them to the various in-game missions.

The customization mechanics also have a social aspect as gamers can use a character's cellphone to get a picture of their modified vehicle and upload it straight to the GTA V Social Club.

The game is set to launch on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony on September 17.
