Portable HDDs are all well and good, but they aren't exactly the fastest tools in the shed, and with SSDs stealing the limelight there, they don't sweat it too much. G-Technology still felt it should speed things up though.
So it took the G-Drive slim and G-Drive mobile hard disk drives and pushed the platter rotary speed from 5,400 RPM to 7,200 RPM.
That makes them 20-40-43% faster at reading and writing data.
The drives retain their USB 3.0 interface, which is now used to a greater extent thanks to the better platter rotation.
Keep in mind that the G-Drive mobile is actually 1 TB 7,200 RPM HGST Travelstar 7K1000 in USB 3.0 cases. The transfer rate is of up to 136 MB/s (43% better than 5,400-RPM counterpart). G-Technology expects $139.95 / €139.95 in exchange for every unit sold.
As for the G-Drive slim, it is a 125 MB/s unit (23% better) of 500 GB and price of $89.95 / €89.95.
