It would appear that the 2011 NAB event in Las Vegas has turned into the proving ground for many sorts of devices, some of which have been brought there by G-Technology, a Hitachi subsidiary.

The thing about international IT trade shows is that they act as a gathering place for companies from around the world.

Once there, they settle at their booths and do all they can to outdo each other and gain as much favor with participants and consumers worldwide as possible.

NAB 2011 is not exception to this, hence why G-Technology decided to bring along, among other things, the G-DRIVE duro portable drive.

Essentially, it is an external hard disk drive with a form factor compact enough that carrying it around in a pocket or bag should be easy.

Unlike many of its peers, it is not actually meant for PCs, since it is formatted for Mac systems instead. In fact, is has FireWire support, besides just the USB (Universal Serial Bus) 2.0 interface (no USB 3.0, alas).

“Rugged good looks and G-Technology’s known quality go hand-in-hand with the new G-DRIVE duro portable drive,” is what the press release says.

Ruggedness comes from the fact that the case that has a fair degree of shock resistance ”in case it tumbles out of your gear bag while you’re shooting your next production.”

Of course, G-technology made sure to aim at more than one consumer layer, so it made the device available in two capacities.

Said capacities are 500GB and 750GB, whose prices are of $149.99 and $179.99, respectively.

The only so called downside to this announcement is that, even though the G-DRIVE duro portable is far enough along to be demonstrated at NAB, it is not ready for mass availability.

That stage, according to the formal announcement, will not be reached until June this year (2011).
