News from Japan says that cleanup activities at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant are going according to plan.

This might come as a bit of a shock, given Tepco's long list of incidents reported at this facility, but here's hoping the company will continue to surprise us in the months to come.

Clean Technica tells us that, since cleanup operations began earlier this month, workers have managed to remove several unused nuclear fuel rods from the plant's Reactor No. 4.

Once pulled out of the reactor's cooling pond, the rods were tucked away in steel-walled canisters and transported by truck to a safer location, the same source details.

By the looks of it, Tepco wishes to first remove the unused fuel rods from Reactor No. 4, and only later deal with the spent ones. This is because the latter are much more dangerous to handle.

The company says that, judging by how things are going, it will take about a year to transfer all the fuel rods in Reactor No. 4 to a safer location.
