Fujitsu Group aims to aid in the establishment of a worldwide low-carbon society by 2020 and, to this end, it plans to turn its Green Policy Innovation project into a worldwide effort. World leaders decided, during the most recent Group of Eight Summit, that efforts should be made to halve greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050. Fujitsu will do its best to reduce the environmental footprint of its datacenters and IT equipment, even aiming to release new environmentally friendly IT products for the worldwide IT industry.

Fujitsu established its first environmental program as far back as 1993. Since then, the group's vision has been centered around reducing the detrimental effects of IT on the environment by funding and researching new methods of achieving better power management and less pollution. Fujitsu Group won Europe's first Tier III certification from Uptime Institute in the United Kingdom for its sustainable datacenter with free cooling, among other innovations. Fujitsu has also been exploring alternative ways for power generation, even powering its Japanese facilities through the use of solar cells.

The group aims to combine the expertise of all its worldwide operators in order to further accelerate its advancements in green computing. The current goal is to reduce the total CO2 emission by 15 million tons by 2011. This will be done by not only optimizing Fujitsu's own installments, but also by encouraging its customers and the industry as a whole to develop IT solutions that are more energy efficient.

The Green Policy Innovation program was launched by Fujitsu in 2007 and, during the first two years alone, the company achieved CO2-emission reductions of 2.23 million tons. Since then, the company has begun and accelerated the same initiative outside Japan, with the aim of helping its customers reduce their environmental footprint while becoming the forerunners in Fujitsu's mid-term vision, Green Policy 2020.

Fujitsu Group already has a variety of solutions for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly computing as part of the "OF IT" initiative. The group has already introduced and installed various green servers around the world, all employing cutting-edge energy efficiency and advanced power-management features. Examples of such servers are the compact, low-power PRIMERGY BX900 and PRIMERGY TX120, and the ETERNUS DX60/DX80 (43% less power usage and 60% fewer parts than previous servers), among others. Fujitsu also released consumer-aimed green products, such as the world's first 0-Watt PC with zero emissions during standby (ESPRIMO E7935 0-Watt) and the LifeBook T4410, an EPEAT Gold-certified mercury free Green PC for North America.

The "BY IT" initiative deals mainly with the CO2 emission form datacenters. Fujitsu Group will be, and has been, placing special effort into reducing their environmental footprint. The Group will offer outsourcing services from its datacenters equipped with green IT solutions, such as free cooling or state-of-the-art water cooling and recycling systems. The Group has also implemented spot air-conditioning systems, which are capable of thermofluid simulation and multipoint temperature monitoring using optical fibers.

Fujitsu plans to continue upgrading its outsourcing solutions in order to ensure an overall environmental footprint reduction, both that of its datacenters and of its customers.
