12.1 inches of beauty with no moving parts

One would think that in the era of faster and bigger notebooks no one has the time to buy a lightweight laptop PC. While that may be true especially for those in search of a desktop replacement, some manufacturers still produce very successful laptop lines, most of them based upon tablet PCs and UMPCs in terms of internal chassis and design.

For example, Fujitsu has just announced a new 12.1" Tablet PC designed especially for the Japanese market. This one is Santa Rosa based and has a pretty cryptic name for a stylized tablet PC. Called FMV-T8140, the new portable can support both Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 and Windows Vista Business as a primary OS.

The FMV-T8140 uses an Ultra Low Voltage 1.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo U7500 CPU and features 1GB of DDR2 memory (512MB on the Windows XX-based model and 1GB for the Vista-based one). The 12.1" LCD panel uses a standard 1200x800 resolution and comes with the same wide aspect ratio used by most portables.

A 30GB classical HDD is standard on the FMV-T8140 but if you like a bigger unit you can always choose an 80GB model. However as an option you can also add up a 16GB or 32GB SDD. As a result the tablet could substantially increase its standby and operation time.

The FMV-T8140 measures only 11.69" x 8.62" x 1.3" and has a total body weight of only 3.3 pounds. Fujitsu states that with a standard battery back the portable can last for 6.8 hours while 10.2 hours can be achieved using the extended battery (7.5 hours and 11.3 hours when running Windows XP).

Unfortunately this portable will only enter the Japanese market. The MSRP for the FMV-T8140 is $2138 USD (for the Windows Vista model) and $1976 USD for the Windows XP model. Both versions will enter mass release in a few days so you will be able to find them on stores in about a week. The only issue is you have to live in Japan.
