Frugalware 0.8, codename Kalgan, for the i686 architecture was released, as announced by the Frugalware Developer Team. This is the eighth stable release of Frugalware, with a lot of bug fixes and changes since the release candidate, but no new features.

The most important changes since Frugalware 0.7 are:

■ Updated base system: Linux kernel version 2.6.24.3, Glibc 2.7 and GCC 4.2.3 ■ The latest desktop packages: KDE 3.5.9, GNOME 2.20, Xfce 4.4.2, OpenOffice.org 2.4rc2 and Firefox 2.0.0.12 ■ The Czech language is now supported and, talking about support, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is now available, too. ■ A brand-new graphical tool, called FUN, for notifying the user about updates, is included. I wonder, will it be fun to use it or not? ■ There are more than 4,000 changes, with 251 new packages, 1,729 updated ones and 416 closed tasks.

If you're thinking which installation method suits you best, here's the solution for your problem. In case you are a console cowboy, and want to ride through the prairies of a server without X, you should only download the first CD. If you are somewhere in the middle, and you need to see some beautiful images, not only text on a black background, then you should download the first and second CD as well.

Besides the CD installation method, a DVD one is a available too, which comes on two DVDs. The advantage offered by this setup is that it allows a full offline installation, with language packs and other optional packages.

The third install method, which is much more geekish - which is best suited for someone with a high patience - than the other two, is the Netinstall. This is a small ISO image, of only 32 MB, that's able to boot up, configure the network and install the system with the selected packages. These are downloaded on the fly as required. The advantage offered by the Netinstall is the small image size, but the disadvantage is the high bandwidth and hours necessary for a full installation.
