Players can finally enjoy From Dust without being connected to the Internet at all times

Ubisoft's From Dust god simulator has finally seen the restrictive digital rights management system (DRM) which required a permanent online Internet connection to play the game, removed via a patch released on Valve's Steam service.

From Dust was launched back in July for the Xbox 360, as part of the Xbox Live Summer of Arcade promotion, and arrived, after being delayed once, on the PC in August.

Sadly, its debut on Valve's Steam digital distribution service wasn't fortunate, as customers who bought it were surprised to find out that the game required an always-on Internet connection in order to play it, despite Ubisoft guaranteeing that it only needed a one-time check, when the game was started for the first time.

After a huge backlash from customers, with Steam even allowing refunds because the DRM system was misrepresented, Ubisoft has now made good on its word and eliminated the piracy protection system, with a new patch that's now available on Steam.

Basically, the new patch allows From Dust to be played in offline mode, with the storage of the save files being moved from Ubisoft's uPlay passport to the local computer of the player.

Such issues didn't affect the Xbox 360 version of the game, and won't interfere with tomorrow's release of From Dust on the PlayStation 3 console.

In case you're not familiar with the concept of the game, check out its official description below, straight from Ubisoft.

"Discover a unique Modern God game in which nature is the star. “From Dust” is the latest original concept by Eric Chahi, visionary creator of “Another World.” Behold the beauty of a primitive world pulsing with life and face the might of nature. Beware the danger of a world that is constantly changing under your command."

"Control the destiny of a tribe struggling to survive and help it recover its ancestors’ lost powers. Immerse yourself in a world as exotically beautiful as it is dangerous. A universe where nature reclaims what is hers and you are your people’s only chance of survival."

From Dust is available on Steam for $14.99.
